Amid declining demand for traditional student stationery due to a shrinking school-age population and the growing use of digital devices, the stationery industry is expanding its product offerings into lifestyle, hobbies, decorating, and creative activities.
In the past, stationery was primarily viewed as an essential tool for recording information at schools and offices. Today, however, it is increasingly used as a means of expressing personal tastes and emotions through diary decorating, handwriting, calligraphy, and drawing. In addition to practicality, factors such as color, design, and user experience are also influencing consumers’ purchasing decisions.
Korean stationery company MORRIS is responding to these changing consumer trends with its ‘Bamboo Series,’ a product line designed for everyday writing as well as a variety of creative and expressive activities.
Inspired by bamboo, the Bamboo Series features simple forms and ergonomic designs. Each product offers different nib shapes, line widths, and colors, allowing users to choose according to their needs, from writing and note-taking to diary decorating, handwriting, and drawing. The Bamboo Series wased as an Excellent Design by Good Design Korea.
One of the series’ representative products, the ‘Bamboo Color Pen,’ features a twin-nib design combining 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm tips in a single product. It can be used for drawing lines, writing, and adding color, making it suitable for a range of activities including diary decorating and handwriting.
The ‘Bamboo Liner’ features a fine tip on one end and a chisel tip on the other, supporting both detailed writing and underlining. Available in soft-toned colors, it can be used for note-taking, organizing information, and highlighting text.
The ‘Bamboo Brush,’ a color brush pen, is designed for calligraphy, drawing, and coloring. Available in 20 colors, the set also includes a blender that allows users to adjust color intensity and shading, making it suitable for various creative tasks from sketching to coloring.
With nature-inspired designs, a variety of colors, and different nib shapes and line widths across its products, the Bamboo Series expands the use of stationery beyond writing into decorating and creative expression.
A MORRIS representative said, “Although the traditional demand structure of the stationery market is changing due to the declining school-age population, the purposes for which people use stationery are becoming increasingly diverse, including diary decorating, handwriting, and drawing. We will continue to expand our product range so that consumers can experience the joy of expression and creativity in their everyday lives, going beyond stationery simply as a tool for recording information.”
Meanwhile, MORRIS has developed a wide range of writing instruments and marker products since its establishment in 1993. In recent years, the company has been improving product functionality and design in response to changing lifestyles and consumer preferences, while expanding its products into lifestyle, hobby, and creative fields.
